Why Resolutions?

Each year, the National Executive of CFUW arranges a meeting with the federal government to discuss the current resolutions and any former resolutions relevant to current issues. At these meetings, ministers and their advisers are present to hear from our organization about issues of concern to our members. They know these policies were adopted after thorough discussion and approval by 10,000 non-partisan, educated women in over 120 clubs across the country.

A new policy resolution begins with a club writing a resolution, complete with background material and bibliography, on a matter they wish to have action taken on. These issues often relate to education, health, human rights and social well-being for women and girls in particular, and society as a whole. The resolutions are vetted by the CFUW resolutions committee and then are sent out to all clubs in February for debate. Each club votes on whether to support the resolutions, and sends in any amendments they feel will strengthen them.

At the Annual General Meeting of CFUW in August, club delegates vote on each resolution as instructed by their club. Because resolutions change in their wording during the voting process, it is important that each club's delegate be aware of her club's voting wishes.

CFUW-Nanaimo considers resolutions and votes on them at the March meeting. The CFUW-Nanaimo delegate to the AGM is present at this meeting, and votes at the AGM according to the March directives.
